The Surprising Benefits of Liposuction

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013
The nation’s fourth most popular cosmetic procedure, according to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), may have some surprising health benefits that you didn’t know about. As we all know, procedures like laser liposuction removes excess fat and generally leaves most patients with a better looking body and a new attitude. But studies in recent years have found that getting liposuction may reduce the amount of harmful fat circulating in the blood and lower your risk of heart disease.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Denver had found that patients who started with high triglycerides in their blood ended up with a 43% reduction in those triglycerides. That is almost twice the amount reduction people usually get by taking cholesterol-lowering medications. The study was led by Dr. Eric Swanson, who also found that patients’ white blood cell counts fell 11% after having a liposuction procedure.

This lowering of triglycerides or “bad fats” in conjunction with reduction of white blood cells are both ways to lower a patient’s risk of heart attacks, obesity, strokes and high blood pressure. Other than these unseen benefits, liposuction has a lot of known benefits, such as:

  • Control your body shape - Liposuction can hit those areas that exercise has no effect on. A patient can override the body shape that was given to them by their genes and shape certain part of their body the way they’d like it to be.

  • A better chance of the fat staying gone - After a patient has a removal of fat cells, those areas are less likely  to regrow the same cells in the same “problem areas.” A patient that has had liposuction has to stay on a strict diet and exercise regiment since fat cells from other areas of the body can spread to the sections you’ve had the procedure on.

  • Newfound confidence - Liposuction will give you a newfound sense of confidence in yourself and in your own body.

UMD Cosmetic Surgery woman

Every person on Earth has a body shape that is unique to them. We all have our curves, dips, twists and turns. Our body shapes also change with age. The older we get, the more it seems to fluctuate and change. If you’re unhappy with the current shape of your body, why not let the professionals at University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness help you with body contouring procedures?

Body contouring is a less invasive procedure for reshaping your body and can also remove excess fat. Our body contouring procedures improve the shape and tone of your underlying tissue Here are just some of the procedures that are included under the umbrella of body contouring:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - Abdomens become lax and saggy. Although exercise can help muscles, it cannot change the skin. An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal region. It can also restore weakened or separated muscles creating a tummy that is smoother and firmer. Minimal skin excess can be treated with short scar mini-abdominoplasties. Abdominoplasties can also be combined with liposuction of the flanks or other areas.

  • Liposuction - This procedure removes excess fat from the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts, back, arms, or neck. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula that is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Fat removal is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and thus result in an improved body contour. Sometimes laser or ultrasonic cannulas are used. The only visible scar is the small scar where the port enters the body. Certain small areas of fat can be treated with local anesthesia and minimal down time.

  • Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) - An arm lift reshapes the under portion of the upper arm, from the elbow to the shoulder. Often seen after weight loss or with age, flabby arms can be recontoured and tightened to fit into clothing and look proportionate to the rest of the body. This procedure is common and many people who don’t enjoy the flab that may have developed on their arms.

  • Thigh Lift - Fatty bulges in the inner thigh can cause rubbing, chaffing, rashes, and difficulty with exercising. A thigh lift removes skin and fat from the inner, upper portion of the leg, resulting in a smoother, more toned look to the legs. It’s like a suave makeover for your legs!
