Face Procedures: Nose, Neck & Chin from UMD

Monday, May 13th, 2013
Facial aesthetics are often one of the most important part of a person’s self image and self esteem. While we can’t change all of the features that we’re born with, we can reshape areas of our face to conform to the standards of what we see in the mirror. Sometimes we have birth defects or health problems causes by an abnormality in our face. If you’re unhappy with the state of your face, The University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness understands and can help. We do multiple face and neck procedures including: Rhinoplasty (nose), Platysmaplasty (neck) and Genioplasty (chin).

UMD Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness

Rhinoplasty is a procedure for the nose that is utilized to change its shape or improve its function. It is a common aesthetic procedure which often has a functional component. It can be done for a variety of reasons including correcting breathing problems that are a result of disfigurment from tramua or birth defects. The main goal of the procedure is to create a natural nose and restore balance to the face. It normally takes two to three weeks to be able to return to normal functions without anyone knowing you’ve had the procedure done.

Platysmaplasty is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the neck. The neck and jaw line are one of the first places people begin to see signs of aging. A neck lift can help in removing excess skin, removing or altering neck muscles, removing excess fat or using Botox injections to address the fullness of the neck. The procedure removes excess fat and skin and tightens the muscles to give a natural, smooth look. Patients that suffer with “double chins” or “turkey wattle neck” after losing a significant amount of weight can benefit from this procedure.

And finally, Genioplasty is a procedure that alters the shape, position and structure of your chin. It is often done together with a neck lift or liposuction of the neck but in congenital or posttraumatic cases may be done alone. Your chin is an important part of your face, shaping out of the bottom and giving your face a sense of completeness. Most of UMD’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness’s face and neck procedures can be done in conjunction with one another. Consult your local UMD physician today to figure out which procedures may be right for you.

Injectable Skin Treatments in Baltimore, Maryland from UMD

Monday, May 6th, 2013
As we age, our skin develop deep wrinkles such as laugh lines, crow’s feet and forehead furrows. One way to remedy this is by getting an injectable skin treatment such as Botox. Injectable cosmetic wrinkle fillers are soft tissue fillers approved as medical devices by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These devices are injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Most of these wrinkle fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body.

The FDA has approved absorbable injectable cosmetic wrinkle fillers for correcting soft tissue contour defects, such as moderate and severe wrinkles and folds. Some absorbable fillers are approved for restoring or correcting the signs of facial fat loss in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Botox specifically is a brand name of a toxin created by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. Those muscles effected can’t contract, thus making the wrinkles relax and soften.

After a the simple, relatively painless Botox procedure is done, it takes about three to seven days to take full effect. It is advisable to avoid alcohol at least one week before the procedure and taking anti-inflammatory medications a few weeks before will also help reduce bruising and swelling. Consult with your local Baltimore University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness doctor to develop a plan that will ensure the procedure goes over smoothly – and that it will ensure that you have smooth skin for years to come.

At UMD’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness, we offer several different types of injectables including Botox, Juvaderm, Restylane, Radiesse. These can be used in combination to treat wrinkles achieving a smooth rested appearance. Loss of volume in the face is a normal part of the aging process. Fillers can be used to augment areas which appear deflated. Lines around the eyes, on the forehead and between the brows can make you appear tired, older and even angry. Botox softens these lines.

Breast Augmentation from UMD’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness

Monday, April 29th, 2013

There are many different kinds of procedures for changing the appearance, shape and size of your breasts. There are breast enlargements (also known as augmentations), breast reductions, breast reconstructions, breast lifts (mastopexy) and gynecomastia. All of these procedures modify the breasts in different ways. The procedure that is right for you will depend on what result you’re looking for.

Most women seeking cosmetic augmentation want naturally looking but fuller breasts. At the University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness, we will listen to you to determine your goals, as not every patient wants the same postoperative size. We will have you try on various sizes of implants and we will choose a size together. We will also tell you about saline and silicone implants, putting the implant above or below the muscle, and the various incisions that are possible for you. Round and contoured implants will also be discussed so that you can be fully aware of your choices and participate in all decision making.

We will also point out any features of your breasts, such as asymmetries or nipple position, that you may want to consider in your decision making process. We are committed to well informed patients and we will be happy to answer all your questions. Augmenation evaluations often take a full hour, so schedule plenty of time. When you have a breast augmentation done, an implant is placed under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle beneath the breast. An implant is a soft silicone shell filled with silicone gel or a saline (saltwater) solution. An incision is made either at the bottom crease of the breast, the armpit or along the lower edge of the areola. The implants are put in through such incisions and after careful adjustment, it is closed up with stitches.

Body Contouring from University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness

UMD Cosmetic Surgery woman

Every person on Earth has a body shape that is unique to them. We all have our curves, dips, twists and turns. Our body shapes also change with age. The older we get, the more it seems to fluctuate and change. If you’re unhappy with the current shape of your body, why not let the professionals at University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness help you with body contouring procedures?

Body contouring is a less invasive procedure for reshaping your body and can also remove excess fat. Our body contouring procedures improve the shape and tone of your underlying tissue Here are just some of the procedures that are included under the umbrella of body contouring:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - Abdomens become lax and saggy. Although exercise can help muscles, it cannot change the skin. An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal region. It can also restore weakened or separated muscles creating a tummy that is smoother and firmer. Minimal skin excess can be treated with short scar mini-abdominoplasties. Abdominoplasties can also be combined with liposuction of the flanks or other areas.

  • Liposuction - This procedure removes excess fat from the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts, back, arms, or neck. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula that is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Fat removal is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and thus result in an improved body contour. Sometimes laser or ultrasonic cannulas are used. The only visible scar is the small scar where the port enters the body. Certain small areas of fat can be treated with local anesthesia and minimal down time.

  • Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) - An arm lift reshapes the under portion of the upper arm, from the elbow to the shoulder. Often seen after weight loss or with age, flabby arms can be recontoured and tightened to fit into clothing and look proportionate to the rest of the body. This procedure is common and many people who don’t enjoy the flab that may have developed on their arms.

  • Thigh Lift - Fatty bulges in the inner thigh can cause rubbing, chaffing, rashes, and difficulty with exercising. A thigh lift removes skin and fat from the inner, upper portion of the leg, resulting in a smoother, more toned look to the legs. It’s like a suave makeover for your legs!
