Considering Cosmetic Surgery

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

If you’re thinking about getting cosmetic surgery, you’re probably wondering what you need to take into consideration before making your decision. In this blog we’ll talk about some of the factors you should consider when deciding whether or not to get cosmetic surgery.

Your Physical and Mental Condition

The better condition you’re in physically, the better your body will be able to handle a cosmetic surgery procedure. Smokers for example may want to consider quitting before going forward with a procedure. In addition to physical readiness, you’ll want to make sure that you’re mentally ready as well. If you’re hesitant or unsure, a cosmetic surgeon can help clarify any areas of concern for you and help you make your decision.

Risks and Recovery

As with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with cosmetic surgery Your surgeon will inform you of the risks associated with your procedure, and as a professional will take every step to minimize them. You should also take into consideration the amount of recovery time your procedure may require, which ranges from several days to several months. Keep in mind that properly going through the recovery process is as important as the procedure itself.

Costs

Most insurance does not cover cosmetic surgery procedures. We offer financing and payment plans to make payment easier and more convenient.

Interesting Facts About Cosmetic Surgery From UMD’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery and Wellness

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

Cosmetic surgery has surprisingly been around for as far back as the early nineteenth century. During World War I, cosmetic surgery was performed on injured soldiers to reconstruct parts of their body that were damaged due to combat. The surgeries that existed at that time included such procedures as skin grafting and surgery on body parts such as a broken jaw or a displaced nose.

There are many different kinds of procedures for changing the appearance, shape and size of your breasts. There are breast enlargements (also known as augmentations), breast reductions, breast reconstructions, breast lifts (mastopexy) and gynecomastia. All of these procedures modify the breasts in different ways. The procedure that is right for you will depend on what result you’re looking for.

Most women seeking cosmetic augmentation want naturally looking but fuller breasts. At the University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness, we will listen to you to determine your goals, as not every patient wants the same postoperative size. We will have you try on various sizes of implants and we will choose a size together. We will also point out any features of your breasts, such as asymmetries or nipple position, that you may want to consider in your decision making process. We are committed to well informed patients and we will be happy to answer all your questions. Augmenation evaluations often take a full hour, so schedule plenty of time. When you have a breast augmentation done, an implant is placed under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle beneath the breast. An implant is a soft silicone shell filled with silicone gel or a saline (saltwater) solution. An incision is made either at the bottom crease of the breast, the armpit or along the lower edge of the areola. The implants are put in through such incisions and after careful adjustment, it is closed up with stitches.

Laser Liposuction from UMD’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness

Monday, March 25th, 2013
If you’re unhappy with the amount of fat on your body and also have fear of being left with loose skin after any kind of procedure you have done in Maryland, laser liposuction may be for you. Laser liposuction is a treatment that removes fat and tightens skin. It can be done under local anesthesia while you are awake making the recovery time much faster. Traditional liposuction was generally used for people with firm skin to prevent the sagging of skin afterwards. Research has found that with the addition of lasers, skin is able to be tightened during the procedure to prevent skin from sagging.

The main purpose of liposuction is to reshape one or more areas of your body, and is not a method that is meant to reduce body weight. Liposuction is typically used on areas around the body that haven’t responded to diet and exercise. These areas are often on the outer thighs and hips on women and the waist and back on men. The face, neck, abdomen, back, buttocks, legs, and upper arms are all also commonly treated areas.

A study which looked at nearly 2,200 women and men who received laser liposuction found that those patients had between 20 and 80 percent skin tightening. According to Dr. Abbas Chamsuddin of  the Center for Laser and Interventional Surgery in Atlanta, the amount of skin tightening with laser liposuction is almost 50 percent better than traditional liposuction methods. The study also found that laser liposuction could also lead to less blood loss since the lasers dry the blood vessels.

While traditional liposuction sucks the fat out in its solid form with a small pen-like vacuum, laser liposuction melts the fat with lasers and then vacuums the fat out in a similar way. The doctors then use a laser of a different wavelength that is absorbed by skin cells to create an “artificial burn” that tells the body to release collagen in the area, which causes the skin to tighten. There’s another form of liposuction that uses ultrasound to melt fat, but the body is better at absorbing the laser wavelengths than the ultrasound waves.

The main advantage of laser liposuction is skin tightening. Other liposuction methods may not be as efficient in the area of skin tightening after a procedure as laser liposuction is. Come down to University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness today for a consultation as to whether laser liposuction is the answer to your body shape issue.

Facial Aesthetics from University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness

Monday, March 18th, 2013
A person’s identity is often linked to their facial features. Their concepts of beauty and attractiveness are also usually linked to facial features. This is true so much so that there is a ratio of facial features considered to be the “Golden Ratio.” The National Institute of Health recently found “new” golden ratios, stating that the distance of a face’s vertical distance between the eyes and the mouth would be approximately 36% of its length, and the horizontal distance between the eyes would be approximately 46% of the face’s width. There is serious science behind the theory of facial proportionality and beauty.

UMD Natural Beauty

While there may be a scientific standard for facial beauty, at UMD’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness, we understand that each face is different. And we also understand that there are certain features that can give a face its own unique beauty. The aging process However, if there are certain features on your face that you’re not happy with, we can help you with a number of facial aesthetic surgeries dealing with the face and the neck. Here are just a few of the face and neck procedures that we offer:

  • Eyelid (Blepharoplasty) - Eyelid surgery can help correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes. The recovery time is relatively short and provides a youthful and rested appearance. It can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgical procedures such as a facelift or a browlift.

  • Browlift (Coronoplasty) - A browlift, also known as a forehead lift, is a common facial rejuvenation treatment often combined with a facelift and/or a blepharoplasty. This procedure can help remove or minimize unsightly lines or wrinkles on the forehead, as well as sagging or uneven eyebrows. It can also give a different ratio for your face.

  • Facelift (Rhytidectomy) - While a facelift can’t stop the aging process, it does rejuvenate and turn the clock back. As people age, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and the stresses of daily life begin to show. A face lift can address drooping and sagging as well as loss of volume. This is a procedure which can be done alone or in conjunction with other procedures.

A more in-depth look on Rhytidectomy: it is the most extensive way to remove or reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging of the face caused by age. The patient’s skin is literally lifted off the face so that the skin and the tissues beneath can be tightened and the skin can be repositioned smoothly over the face. The surgery usually only takes a few hours. And you may be able to go to your Maryland home that day, but sometimes patients spend one night in the hospital.
