Body Contouring Procedures from UMD Cosmetic Surgery

Friday, February 14th, 2014

Here at the University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we offer several body contouring procedures that can reshape areas of your body that have not responded to diet, exercise, or skin care regimens.

Tummy Tuck

Also known as an abdominoplasty, tummy tucks help firm up your tummy by removing excess fat and skin from your lower abdominal region, which tends to sag with age. It can also help restore weakened or separated muscles in the area to make it both smoother and firmer. Tummy tucks can be combined with liposuction.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that is used to remove excess fat from many areas of the body, including the stomach, back, legs, and neck. You can read our blog about how laser liposuction works to get an understanding of the procedure.

Arm Lift

Arm lifts reshape the area of the upper arm around the triceps, which commonly becomes loose with age, or may appear so after weight loss.

Thigh Lift

This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the inner, upper portion of the leg, which gives a more toned look and reduces chaffing and rashes that may impede exercise.

Common Body Contouring Procedures

Friday, September 13th, 2013

There are lots of great ways to contour your body, including exercise, diet, and skin care. However, sometimes no matter how hard we try, our bodies just won’t quite reach the shape we desire. Pesky areas of fat remain despite good exercise and dieting habits. This is where body contouring procedures come in. Cosmetic surgery can help shape regions of your body that cannot be improved by other means.

Abdominoplasty, as known as a tummy tuck, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. As you age, your abdomen begins to sag. Though exercise can help strengthen your core, loose skin will still be there. Tummy tucks remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal region. This procedure can also restore weakened or separated muscles to strengthen the abdomen. Tummy tucks sometimes are done in conjunction with another popular cosmetic procedure, liposuction.

Liposuction is a procedure used to remove fat from the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts, back, arms or neck. The procedure involves a small stainless steel tube called a cannula, which is inserted into regions of fat through a small incision in the skin. The cannula creates tunnels in the fat which collapse after the surgery and improve the contour of your body.

Arm and thigh lifts are two more common procedures, both of which can be used to combat the effects of aging. Over time gravity pulls down regions of the arms and thighs. Contouring can be used to reshape these spots and bring them back to their former proportions.

The Benefits of Arm Lift Procedures for Summertime Confidence

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Arm Lift Summertime means tank tops and swimsuits and with those come bare arms. For people who have recently lost weight or find their skin has become less elastic with age, it can mean skipping the beach or a poolside bash in favor of keeping that loose skin on the upper arms covered.  UMD Center for Cosmetic Surgery and Wellness offers arm lifts to solve this problem.

Starting at the elbow and extending to the armpit, this lift involves removing the excess skin and allows the arms to look tight and toned again. Here are a few more things to know about arm lifts

  • Candidacy – While people who just feel like they could use some tightening are candidates, the people who most often look to get arm lifts are those who have lost a significant amount of weight, and older women who have lost elasticity in their skin. With any type of cosmetic surgery, it is best to be in good health and knowledgeable of the benefits and risks of cosmetic surgery.
  • Benefits – Smooth, tight arms can help give a confidence boost and get you in those short sleeve shirts and swimsuits in the summer. The scarring is minimal and the doctors at the Center for Cosmetic Surgery and Wellness will make sure that it is in a place that is not easily noticeable. Good self esteem and high confidence can help lead to a healthier and happier you. This procedure can also make you more comfortable physically since the excess skin will no longer be weighing you down.
  • Risks – As with any surgical procedure, there are risks of complication. These include possible infection, swelling of arms and hands, scarring, and bleeding. Though your doctor will do their best to keep the scarring to a minimum, the scar will be very visible at first and will fade with time to become more unnoticeable. The best way to avoid complications is to follow the postoperative instructions laid out by your doctor.

If you are uncomfortable with the way your upper arms look, this could be a great solution for you to get out and enjoy the summer with friends and family.

UMD Cosmetic Surgery woman

Every person on Earth has a body shape that is unique to them. We all have our curves, dips, twists and turns. Our body shapes also change with age. The older we get, the more it seems to fluctuate and change. If you’re unhappy with the current shape of your body, why not let the professionals at University of Maryland’s Center for Cosmetic Surgery & Wellness help you with body contouring procedures?

Body contouring is a less invasive procedure for reshaping your body and can also remove excess fat. Our body contouring procedures improve the shape and tone of your underlying tissue Here are just some of the procedures that are included under the umbrella of body contouring:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) - Abdomens become lax and saggy. Although exercise can help muscles, it cannot change the skin. An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal region. It can also restore weakened or separated muscles creating a tummy that is smoother and firmer. Minimal skin excess can be treated with short scar mini-abdominoplasties. Abdominoplasties can also be combined with liposuction of the flanks or other areas.

  • Liposuction - This procedure removes excess fat from the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts, back, arms, or neck. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula that is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Fat removal is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and thus result in an improved body contour. Sometimes laser or ultrasonic cannulas are used. The only visible scar is the small scar where the port enters the body. Certain small areas of fat can be treated with local anesthesia and minimal down time.

  • Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) - An arm lift reshapes the under portion of the upper arm, from the elbow to the shoulder. Often seen after weight loss or with age, flabby arms can be recontoured and tightened to fit into clothing and look proportionate to the rest of the body. This procedure is common and many people who don’t enjoy the flab that may have developed on their arms.

  • Thigh Lift - Fatty bulges in the inner thigh can cause rubbing, chaffing, rashes, and difficulty with exercising. A thigh lift removes skin and fat from the inner, upper portion of the leg, resulting in a smoother, more toned look to the legs. It’s like a suave makeover for your legs!
